Yes, once CNN showed a map of the Greater Los Angeles area, it was obvious it was only the usual suspects in the backlot behind City Hall. But I disagree about shooting the international press being counter-productive. It's right there on page one of the Donald Trump playbook. The one he got from his mate Bibi.
God help the Red Cross if supplies start running short and they have to fight their way in through the forces of law'n'order. Though it's mostly the Red Crescent, if you get my drift.

Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand-new beat
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the street

Way down in L.A., everyday

The Ballymena riots are highly interesting sociologically. On the mainland, rioting is always colour-based. White migrants might be moaned about but they are not rioted against.
For as long as anyone can remember, Northern Irish rioting has always been denominationally-based: white Protestants vs white Catholics. Now that has become a relative thing of the past, everyone's turning on the Romanians!

When you're a government totally strapped for cash, always spend the money you haven't got on something totally misconceived, like the thirty-nine billion Rachel is giving Angela to spend on 'affordable housing', or totally unnecessary like increased defence spending when no-one is threatening you (apart from Donald Trump, if you don't). Anything left over should go to pensioners who aren't poor enough to get Pension Credit.

The only way to square the circle is to increase growth. The two 'achievements' of the first year of Labour government has been (1) to raise the employers' NI contribution (growth dives) and (2) to halve the rate of immigration (growth dives).
But never mind that because it will all get swallowed up in increased interest rates anyway if the bond market thinks Labour is spending money or will spend money on anything that will please the voters.
So at least there's no danger from that quarter.

A Socialist Speaks
At the moment people are fed up with being told what to do or being done to by government and we have to go back to our communities and listen to what they are saying, speak their language and respond to what their demands are and what their values are. Labour MP on Newsnight. |
Can I stop you there? 'Our communities' is coeval with 'the country', isn't it? Their language, their demands, their values is synonymous with 'what the country wants', isn't that right? Good, I just wanted to get that clear in my mind. And since you're the government you're in prime position to deliver it!
I must congratulate you on being, as far as I know, the first left-wing politician prepared to ditch their own view as to what's best for people as soon as you have found it out direct from source, as it were.

The Stupidity of the Left (Part 719)
In the wake of the (genuinely serendipitous) rioting in Los Angeles they have decided they can repeat the trick in all the other cities of the USA. So we'll have some nice set piece actions involving three tiny unpopular minorities (illegal migrants, street demonstrators, the militarised fuzz) battling it out from Bangor, Maine to San Diego.
And watching it all on the telly will be Mr and Mrs America. I suppose they may blame Donald Trump for fomenting this nationwide mayhem but it's not something I would bet on. I would however bet on Mr Trump grinning from ear to ear as he watches it all on his telly.

The problem with the ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids is, as Wiley sees it, that all sensible folks (you can't include some liberals in this definition.... but still) support the deportation of foreign criminals. Why not? They are gang members, rapists and murderers etc.
The ICE has actually focussed on rounding up anybody that is undocumented, which many sensible folks don't support as these folks are hard-working, low-paid types whose children, having been born in US, are now US citizens....so we are deporting folks who, it turns out, were, err, nice and needed.
How this plays out is that Team Trump will now provide evidence of lots of nasty foreigners, whilst the Democrats will provide lots of hard luck stories.
Most folks just wanted the hardened criminals out so they can sleep safely in their bed, but also have a maid in, to do their cleaning.
Surely that is not too much to ask?

Having seen what has happened to Ukraine after it gave up the Nukes for security guarantees, Wiley can see why Iran would want some.
The good news is that they still have the support of Russia, China and Burkina Faso in their quest.

This is a typical liberal statement and not because of the patronising and the self-deprecation. That is standard and revelatory. If you ever find yourself doing it, you know you are a secret liberal and liberalism is prohibited in AE as it breaks the a priori rule. Once you are freed from such a burden you will swiftly realise
Nobody has a view one way or the other about deporting foreign criminals. It is a highly technical area of jurisprudential administration. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't. |
But you won't leave it there. You will search your own soul--now a valid exercise--and swiftly realise
it is part of the human condition to dislike foreigners |
because you yourself dislikes foreigners. That will take you part of the way. You will then apply a soupçon of knowledge and experience to understand
every advanced human society requires foreigners in its midst |
which will take you the rest of the way.

Two developments though in this general area:
1. Word starts emanating from the White House that statements made by Elon Musk when filling out his original immigration forms are sufficiently wide of the mark to justify his being deported from the USA.
2. Tweets start emanating from the Musk house that he may have gone too far in his comments about President Trump.

Trump has just discovered that ICE are deporting farm workers and hospitality workers that these industries desperately need, not actual criminals.
Worse, according to Trump, the criminals that Biden let in are now applying for these vacant jobs.
He has promised a swift reversal.
"Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace," the president wrote.
He added, "In many cases the Criminals allowed into our Country by the VERY Stupid Biden Open Borders Policy are applying for those jobs. This is not good. We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA. Changes are coming!" |

You're being a liberal again, Wiley. They are actual criminals. They entered the USA illegally, remember.

'Let me play devil's advocate...' Anderson Cooper CNN |
Yes, do, Anderson, it's why I give you the time of day. You're the only liberal who ever does and I am reliant on liberal news sources since they are the best ones around. This is what you elicited:
1. A US cabinet minister is addressing a small crowd of journalists about the LA riots in a small room in LA.
2. A middle aged bloke in a windcheater enters the room and starts heckling the cabinet minister aggressively.
3. The cabinet minister's security detail hustle the man out.
4. The geezer keeps on mouthing off and being generally unco-operative in the corridor outside.
5. The Man puts the man on the floor and (not very expertly) cuffs him.
6. So far, so completely normal.
7. El Cuffed One turns out to be the (liberal, Democrat) US Senator for California.
8. Various liberal shits hit various liberal fans.
9. Even unto the portals of Great Britain's Newsnight.
10. Which is being watched by an applied epistemologist who vomits into a small bucket he always keeps handy when watching the news.

All this was interrupted by news of the Israeli take-down of Iran's nuke facilities. I am assuming this is as nasty a surprise to Donald Trump as it is to the Iranians. I can't see Tehran turning up for the talks in Oman on Sunday.
The first signals of Trump's attitude will be whether US (and British) defensive assets in the Middle East are used to intercept the Iranian drones (not missiles) that have been fired off towards Israel. The last time none got through, but that was with US/UK support.
This is a black mark against Israel, but that hardly shows up above background nowadays. It is Trump's Iran policy that is in tatters. The story so far...
1. Obama plus Europe plus Russia plus China does nuclear deal with Iran (no nukes)
2. Trump unilaterally tears up deal
3. Iran starts building nukes (essentially)
4. Trump tries to get Iran back into the Obama box
5. Iran says, 'Convince us you're serious this time'
6. Trump tells Israel, 'Hands off while I talk with Iranians'
7. Israel has just told Trump to go fuck himself
8. Trump has to decide whether he's going to go fuck himself
9. He prolly will after a huff and a puff
10. But if he doesn't, it's the end of the Axis of Evil (Israel and America).
