I didn't get that reference.

But I am like the judge who famously asked counsel, "And who are these Beatles of whom you speak?" "A popular singing group, my lord." When challenged later for being out of touch, the judge explained that he knew who they were but had to make sure the jury did too.

The AEL membership cannot be assumed to know about popular American singers. I wouldn't have recognised the song myself if I hadn't just looked it up.
